Alvix's back is a shield. The top rail is not a plain arch: on either side of the arch that rises at the centre the shoulders hollow into a concave sweep, and the side stiles run a little above the crest to form small ears. There is no carved crest at the crown; the ornament is that serpentine line itself.
The frame is filled with cane across its whole width, and a slim bead running along the inner edge draws the boundary of the weave. The shield does not touch the seat: it stands on two uprights rising from the back and leaves an open gap beneath it.
The legs are curved in the Louis idiom: the front pair push out at the knee, turn back in towards the ankle and finish on a small pad foot. The rear legs do not repeat that curve; they are plain and raked back. There are no stretchers between the legs, the rigidity coming from the seat rail, whose front edge pushes forward at the centre. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a taupe fabric upholstered seat.
Materials and fabric
Solid beech frame with a natural woven cane back inside a shield shaped frame, a serpentine top rail, curved Louis front legs and raked rear legs. In the upholstered version the seat is padded and covered in upholstery fabric.
Care
Wipe the wood with a soft, damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Clean the cane back with a dry brush or a vacuum brush on low power, and never wet it. Treat stains on the fabric seat promptly and locally with a lightly dampened cloth.
