Levro Cane Shield Chair

Levro is the uncarved counterpart to Deyvo: it shares the same shield idiom and the same fluted Louis leg, and is again filled with cane, but carries no carved crest at the crown. The top rail is not a plain arch: on either side of the arch that rises at the centre the shoulders hollow into a concave sweep, while the side stiles run a little above the crest to form small ears. With the crest taken away the eye moves to that serpentine line.

A routed double bead runs along the inner edge of the frame; it is machine profile work, not carving. Unlike Deyvo's broad base, the bottom of this shield closes in a rounded point. The shield does not touch the seat: it stands on two uprights rising from the back and leaves an open gap beneath it.

The front legs begin with a square block whose outer face carries a round roundel; below the block the turned shaft narrows with lengthwise flutes down to a small foot. The rear legs are plain and raked back, and there is no stretcher between the legs at any level. The front edge of the seat rail draws a soft curve that pushes forward at the centre. In the bare frame photograph the cane is already stretched; the only thing left empty is the seat opening. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a moss green fabric upholstered seat.
