Deyvo Carved Cane Shield Chair

Deyvo's back is a shield: it begins at the top with a low arch that opens to both sides, reaches its widest across the shoulders and draws in downward to close in a broad, generously rounded U. Not a point, but a base as wide as a horseshoe. The frame is filled with cane across its whole width; because the weave lets light through, the mass of the shield never grows heavy and the form stays a silhouette.

A carved crest in the leaf and scroll idiom sits at the centre of the arch: it is built from C scrolls opening to both sides from a small central peak, spans roughly two fifths of the shield's width, and is pierced between the scrolls so that light passes through it. It is added as a separate piece and breaks the outline of the shield upward, while the curve of the frame continues uninterrupted beneath the relief. A row of drilled holes runs along the inner edge of the frame and takes the cane strands; the weave is tied to the frame through them.

The front legs begin with a square block whose outer face carries a round roundel; below the block the turned shaft narrows with lengthwise flutes down to a small foot. The rear legs do not repeat that idiom: they are plain sabre legs raking back and outward. There are no stretchers between the legs at any level. In the bare frame photograph the cane is already stretched; the only thing left empty is the seat opening. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a purple fabric upholstered seat.
