Tormivo Carved Shield Back Chair

Tormivo is the carved counterpart to Filvo. The shield shaped back frame is the same: a low arch at the top, lines narrowing inward at the flanks, a rounded point at the bottom. The difference gathers at the crown, where a carved crest in the leaf and scroll idiom sits at the centre of the arch and pulls the eye straight upward.

Two slim beads run one behind the other along the inner edge of the frame. In the bare frame photograph that double line reads on its own across the empty face of the shield; in the upholstered version the fabric sits inside the beads and the lines become its frame.

The front legs begin with a square block whose outer face carries a round roundel, and below the block the turned shaft narrows with lengthwise flutes down to a small foot. The rear legs sweep back like sabres and there are no stretchers between the legs. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version upholstered in taupe fabric.
