Amarilis's back is built from a row of spindles that rise out of the seat and run into the curved crest rail. Each one is turned with a series of lens shaped swellings down its length; light breaks over them, so the back reads as textured even from across a room.
The crest rail curls forward at both ends and wraps the back, but it does not come down to arm height. The legs are not tapered along a single line: they thicken at the top, narrow at the middle and gather again at the foot, and the stretchers between them are worked in the same organic language.
The seat panel is cut and opened in the middle to take an upholstered pad. The photographs show the bare frame alongside the walnut stained version with a navy fabric upholstered seat.
Materials and fabric
Solid beech frame with bobbin turned back spindles, a curved crest rail, organically turned legs and stretchers and a seat panel. In the upholstered version the seat is padded and covered in upholstery fabric.
Care
Wipe wooden surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Treat stains on fabric promptly and locally with a lightly dampened cloth. Keep the wood out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from radiators, and check the joint screws once a year.
