Belindra's top rail is steam bent in one piece. It starts behind the back, wraps to both sides and drops forward to finish in rounded tips; the sitter leans back and rests an arm on the same piece.
The centre splat that carries the rail is split into a Y. The fork opens between the shoulder blades and supports the middle of the rail, keeping the slim section from flexing.
The legs are round in section and tapered, tied by stretchers at two levels. The seat frame is empty in the bare state; in the upholstered version a pad drops into it. The photographs show the bare frame alongside the walnut stained version with a taupe fabric upholstered seat.
Materials and fabric
Steam bent solid beech top rail with a Y shaped centre splat, round tapered legs and stretchers at two levels. In the upholstered version the seat is padded and covered in upholstery fabric.
Care
Wipe wooden surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Treat stains on fabric promptly and locally with a lightly dampened cloth. Keep the wood out of prolonged direct sunlight and away from radiators, and check the joint screws once a year.
