Dovelin Carved Armchair

Dovelin's back is a closed oval medallion raised above the seat on two short uprights. A slim bead travels around the outer edge of the oval and steps inward; the upholstery sits inside that step. Above the medallion sits a carved crest in the leaf and ribbon idiom, and the curve of the oval continues uninterrupted beneath the relief.

The arms leave the two short uprights that raise the medallion at the back, run forward and finish by rolling outward at the tip. The support beneath each arm drops on a forward leaning line to the side seat rail, landing a little behind the front leg. The front edge of the rail is not straight: it is shaped with a soft curve that pushes forward at the centre, and the same beading continues across the rail face.

The front legs are in the Louis idiom. They begin with a square block whose outer face carries a round roundel, and below the block the turned shaft narrows with lengthwise flutes down to a small foot. The rear legs sweep back like sabres. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version upholstered in dark green fabric.
