Felmaro Shell Back Chair

Felmaro's back is not a flat panel but a shell that wraps asymmetrically. Its outline gathers into a teardrop: at one end it closes as a tall rounded lobe, at the other it drops away towards seat height. The shell does not touch the seat but stands above it, leaving an open gap between its lower edge and the seat. A slim curved wooden band runs around it; in the finished version a pad is set inside that band while the wooden edge stays exposed all round.

The legs are deliberately unmatched. On one side stands a flat slab post, about four times as wide as it is thick, flat faced with softened corners: it runs in one piece from the top of the shell down to the floor and is the element that identifies the chair. The other legs are square in section with softened corners, domed at the top and stopping under the seat. The structure is gathered into these few thick members, with no slim spindles or posts.

The seat is a panel with a wavy edge that pushes forward at the centre and turns away to both sides in a broad S curve. On every face the photographs resolve there is no stretcher between the legs at any level; the legs run free to the floor. In the bare frame photograph the seat is still a raw blank: its surface is matt and its edge fibrous, clearly different from the clean timber of the frame. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a beige fabric upholstered back and seat.
