Isven Cane Medallion Armchair

Isven is the armed, cane backed chair of the set. The oval medallion is filled with cane across its whole width and a carved crest in the leaf and scroll idiom sits at its top. The crest is added over the medallion as a separate piece and breaks its outline upward. The oval itself is not one piece either: joint lines where the shaped segments meet read at both shoulders and low on one flank, just below the relief.

The phrase ayak oymalı in the name says the legs are the worked ones. The work goes like this: the front leg begins with a square block whose outer face carries a round roundel, and below the block the turned shaft is narrowed with lengthwise flutes down to a small foot. Those flutes and the roundel are lathe and router work; the only relief carving on the chair is the crest at the top of the medallion.

The arms run almost straight forward and finish by rolling outward at the tip; the support beneath each arm drops on a forward leaning line to the side seat rail, landing a little behind the front leg. The rear legs are plain and raked back, and there are no stretchers between the legs. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a navy fabric upholstered seat.
