Solvi Carved Cane Medallion Chair

Solvi and Oveni share the same classic idiom and the same fluted Louis leg; the difference lies both in the shape of the medallion and in what fills it. Solvi's medallion is very close to a circle, only a little taller than it is wide, and its section is a convex ovolo that broadens at the sides and narrows towards the crest. It is filled edge to edge with cane instead of upholstery, and because the weave lets light through the back does not close off the space behind when the chair is pushed up to a table.

A carved crest in the leaf and scroll idiom sits at the top of the medallion; it is added as a separate piece and breaks the outline of the oval upward. A slim bead runs along the inner edge of the oval and forms the lip of the rebate the cane sits in.

The front legs begin with a square block whose outer face carries a round roundel; below the block the turned shaft narrows with lengthwise flutes down to a small foot. The rear legs are plain and raked back, and there are no stretchers between the legs. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a navy fabric upholstered seat.
