Oveni Carved Crest Medallion Chair

Oveni's back is a closed oval medallion with a carved crest in the leaf and scroll idiom at its top. The medallion is not filled with cane: on the bare frame it stands as an empty ring, and in the upholstered version the fabric sits on the inner step of the frame with its edge disappearing under the wood.

The section of the oval steps from the outside inward: a rounded bead first, then a shallow cove, then the lip of the rebate the upholstery sits in. While it is an empty ring those three steps are the whole ornament of the oval; apart from the crest there is no other relief.

The phrase ayak oymalı in the name says how worked the legs are: the front leg begins with a square block whose outer face carries a round roundel, and below the block the turned shaft is narrowed with lengthwise flutes down to a small foot. Those flutes and the roundel are lathe and router work. The rear legs are plain and raked back, and there are no stretchers between the legs.
