Kalvi Carved Cane Armchair

Kalvi is the cane backed armchair of the set. The oval medallion is filled with cane across its whole width, and a carved crest in the leaf and scroll idiom sits at its top. The crest is added over the medallion as a separate piece, and the curve of the oval continues uninterrupted beneath the relief.

The arms run almost straight forward and finish by rolling outward at the tip. The support beneath each arm drops on a forward leaning line to the side seat rail, landing a little behind the front leg. The opening between arm and seat is left clear, so the lightness of the cane carries on at arm height too.

The front legs are curved in the Louis idiom and finish on a small pad foot; the rear legs do not repeat that curve but are plainer sabre legs raking back and outward in one shallow sweep. The deliberate mismatch between the two pairs sets the chair's profile. There are no stretchers between the legs. The front edge of the seat rail is shaped with a soft curve that pushes forward at the centre, and slim beads travel across the rail face. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a purple fabric upholstered seat.
