Pavio Carved Cane Chair

Pavio is the armless counterpart to Kalvi. The oval medallion is filled with cane and a carved crest in the leaf and scroll idiom sits at its top. With the arms taken away the back reads as slimmer and more upright; the medallion stays the same size but the chair's silhouette narrows.

The medallion does not sit on the seat but stands on two uprights rising from the back. Those uprights start close together where they leave the seat and open slightly as they rise. The gap between them both lightens the chair and leaves the back of the medallion visible when the chair is pushed up to a table.

The front legs are curved in the Louis idiom and finish on a small pad foot. There are no stretchers between the legs; the rigidity comes from the seat rail, whose front edge is curved. In the bare frame photograph you can see the webbing slots on the inner face of the rail, corner blocks and a brace crossing the opening; that brace sits inside the seat box at rail level and disappears entirely once the upholstery is fitted. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with a burgundy fabric upholstered seat.
