Parel Fan Back Chair

Parel's back is a fan that widens upward: it starts narrow at the bottom, opens at the sides and closes at the top in a broad curve. The panel floats between the two rear posts and is screwed to them from the front; in the unfinished photograph the screw heads are left in view.

The rear posts lean back slightly as they rise from the seat and meet the side edges of the panel. An open gap is left between panel and seat, so the back reads not as a mass added to the body but as a surface standing in the air.

The seat is a shaped wooden board laid on top of the frame as a separate piece: it overhangs the rail on every side, its front edge is gently convex and its front corners generously rounded. The legs are round in section and taper towards the floor; a stretcher runs front to back on each side and ties the body. They sit on the side faces only and both are at the same level; there is no front member, nothing medial and no separate footrest. Their apparent rise towards the rear in the photographs is perspective. In the first photograph the chair is complete in natural wood; only the finish and the upholstery are missing. The photographs show the natural wood, unupholstered version alongside the walnut stained one with a brown fabric upholstered back and seat.
