Selvo Fan Back Bar Chair

Selvo carries Parel's back panel up to bar height unchanged: the fan form widening upward floats between the two rear posts and is screwed to them from the front. In the unfinished photograph the screw heads and the layered edge of the panel are left in view; the panel is shaped from one piece and is not assembled from segments.

At bar height the back grows proportionally smaller and the panel's floating character becomes more pronounced; a row of these chairs along a counter never reads as a wall.

The seat is a shaped panel with generously rounded corners and a gently convex front edge, overhanging the curved wooden rim beneath it a little. The legs are square in section, taper towards the floor and splay outward. There is a slim stretcher on each of the four faces and the four close into a continuous ring around the legs; there is no medial member, no cross brace and no second rung. All four sit at the same level, roughly a third of the way up the leg, and the front member is not a separate part but the ring itself doing the work of the footrest. The steep rise of the side and back runs in the photographs is perspective. In the bare frame photograph the back and seat panels are still raw board: the front edge of the seat is chipped and fibrous, and four screw heads are left exposed on the face of the back panel. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version with an orange fabric upholstered back and seat.
