Ranselo Tub Bar Chair

Ranselo's arm rail is a curved band that wraps right around the back. A twin lined bead runs along its upper edge, while its two front ends step down and finish in shaped, downswept terminals. Behind the rail an arch topped back rises from the band, with a rectangular opening left inside it.

A turned baluster support carries each front end of the arm: the shaft swells at the middle like a vase, narrows into rings above and below and rises from a square block on the seat ring. Apart from these two supports there is no other infill between the rail and the seat, which is why the chair does not look heavy even at bar height.

The seat is round and its opening is left empty in the bare frame photograph. All four legs curve outward as they descend. Lower down, stretchers crossing in an X tie the legs together and a turned finial sits at the crossing; separately from these, a bowed footrest band joins the two front legs lower still and carries the same bead moulding as the seat rim. The photographs show the bare, unfinished and unupholstered frame alongside the walnut stained version upholstered in terracotta fabric.
